Onto the Lower and The East

Today I got a special email from London, the colour photos I went to lengths with in three cities around the world were ready developed. It's always such a great moment, with a mix of suspense and discovery, despite quite often too some revelations of mistakes - not few. But it's that process.

I kind of go with the moment onto sharing. I really want to wait to see them all, but the ones from New York are keeping me hopeful I haven't lost the quirks and aspirations of what it all was about.

Rio I love you

After having experienced Rio, I can't wait to rewatch this. I remember it made a big impact when I watched it, entirely on the levels of Paris and New York.

Meeting a new countdown. I know better what the cities mean. And this one will always be special, one of the magic ones. Packing my camera to see if I can express this better this year.

Luang Prabang

In the winter of 2016 I felt impulsive and had been thinking about how long it was since I travelled to Asia and what it had meant to me. The first trip I ever had to the region was to Thailand in the early 2000s with dad and my brother and another family from Madeira was a real opening experience. It was not very long after The Beach had been filmed, a film I will admit ignited a fire in me about seeing more of the world.

It was cold in London as expected and I remember there was just the whisper of snow appearing before taking flight - the day after my birthday with a special night in Dalston to celebrate.

I approached that trip with a very open mind, perhaps too open as it got me in some difficult situation in Hanoi no more than a few days into the trip. What came from this experience, for example to believe that Hanoi would be a warm place - was so out of reality. Hanoi was almost as cold as London and I was wearing my jacket at all times. Apart from that, there was nothing stopping me from exploring the city and I was glad I'd chosen myself the freedom to plan some of the trip from there, being open to a return to Cambodia, possibly even a little adventure in Thailand and Singapore was either not an impossible idea. I had a bunch of film rolls with me and no book on the country, not a very wide set of preconceptions at all. The only thing I was set up with was prepared cash from London, and an idea about travel routes within Vietnam. The train to Ho Chi Minh really had an appeal, and I seeked the idea both from Hanoi and later Ho Chi Minh but decided not too, as I ran out of time and I believe demand was extra high also.

The images I share here are from the second tail of the trip, I decided to fly out of Hanoi coldness to Luang Prabang, whom a friend of mine from Seattle - Matt recommended me as he'd done this route himself. He shared a good amount of info to digest, a good starting point. One-way tickets, surely with the need to feel the temperature and vibe of the place. The trip had a real turning point coming there, as to how to feel about a place. Hanoi had me into some edge and Luang Prabang felt like an enchanting quiet hub; I wanted to believe good things even though my knowledge of the history of Laos keeps me very wary and on the lookout. Once, in the company of the tempels and monks I thought I would be fine, it was intriguing and like a dream to see this place.

Happy New Year, it's time to get things rolling.

Organising things is extremely time consuming of recent so it's key to let it go at the speed it needs, and do it with music.. hang on the music needs a system too. This will come.

Turns out I've saved some over 2000 tracks on Soundcloud in the last decade and I think I could listen to them all in one flow if I could. Perhaps getting them into the playlist mode is a much better user experience, to be considered. Looking for good energy and the ones that have something that makes you instantly connect and wander.

If Boiler room wasn't enough to get you through plenty of music discovery the Lot Radio has some really lovely mixes up. Really inspiring to think a station could be set up on the islands also.

As I look back to these and make sense of the archive I remember how much of an influence Vivian Maier was in 2009 when the first images were revealed to the world.

This past week I have been playing with the Zuiko 18mm - alas the eye of the fish. On the internet, there is rather few displays of what you can do with this OM lense, its use seems very apt for architecture at the least and with some willing risk with low light to experiment with handheld. Curious as always how this can work for photographing people, how close can you you / should you get with knowing where the line goes also.

Paintings - Haarlem 2022

Haarlem, 2022.

I look back at this and they will always remind me of a special period living in Haarlem for a year. It was a really different type of chapter than Rome, but it was equally filled with a room to want to create and so I went on a new frenzy there, acquiring canvases almost every weekend, experimented a lot and didn't necessarily have a fixed agenda to it. Outside of work it was a wonderful release to play with colour, make something in the sketchbook become tangible, mix ideas and discover some of myself through it.

How we were treated moving out is a little sting to the story, since we had to achieve this rather fast to allow for the next tenant to move in, to save costs of a double rent to the new place we found - and so by finding all possible means to make a proper clean up I later found out the lesbian owners of the apartment were complaining of finding some tiny fragments of paint, calling me an amateur painter. I really hope to show those ladies otherwise, even if my passion is self-taught.
