Clockwork
Foreword by Rachael Moloney
A young girl orbits into an explosion of golden midsummer light, in parallel to an enigmatic yet resolved character striding out of a canvas of jazz. Cultural and political nodes intersect as a freerider is juxtaposed against the historic backdrop of Potsdamer Platz.
Subliminal symbolism expressed through the medium of film photography, this series presents the viewer with a collection of urban moments that allude to exploration, connection and the passage of time.
Suffused with a dream-like quality, each image depicts an entangled moment, where something new, and sometimes unexpected, is revealed.
Clockwork traverses stories of the individual as a wandering soul and tender moments of stillness experienced between individuals, evoking the sense that we are all passengers on a journey through myriad landscapes.
Humans often act as mediator in conveying the photographer’s particular interpretation of time and place, and the meaning that travel holds for us.

Joachim Falck-Hansen (b.1984, Oslo, Norway) is an artist based in Rome who works across the media of photography, drawing and painting.
In 2017, he contributed to the photographic project Obsolete & Discontinued, with images from his travels to New York featured in the book Obsolete & Discontinued (Brovira Press, 2018) and in group shows in London (Waterstones, 2018), Naples (Magazzini Fotografici, 2019) and Verona (Grenze-Arsenali Photography Festival, September, 2020).
Inspired by the work of William Klein, Diane Arbus and Robert Frank, Joachim experiments with the tradition of street photography. His images portray ethereal emotions and explore enigmatic characters or gestures, and often have a graphic, architectural element.
Part of his Clockwork series will be on display in 2021 at the annual Grenze-Arsenali Photography Festival.
