Banxt

Shaping a first of its kind Digital Bank for shared 'Co-living'

In the summer of 2021, I was brought on to lead the UX strategy for Banxt, a Scandinavian digital banking startup focused on family-oriented financial literacy. Banxt’s mission is to provide households with a simple way to manage finances.

As design lead, I developed the brand identity and core user experience, ensuring it was functional and aligned with Banxt’s goals. I guided the design from concept to prototype, delivering a seamless experience across key user journeys.

Throughout, I prioritized validating the approach with target personas. This feedback-driven process allowed us to adapt the design to truly meet users’ needs, keeping Banxt’s mission central.

Background

I joined the Fintech Venture at the very defining start stage. My role took for the most part the following responsibility:

  • Unpacking, analyzing and refining the business requirements
  • Designing wireframes and functional prototypes to simulate the key user journeys (e.g document a purchase with photographing the context/item and taking notes to be reminded
  • Engaging in internal and external validation in collaboration with the CTO

The outset for the project

"How to create a common financial space between humans sharing expenses in a single app"

Initial Research

The Fintech scene showcases a variety of priorities, and a shift of being purely functional to visually rich.

Looking to other players such as N26, Revolut, Mondo, Bunq provided an important framework to familiarize with such user experiences and translate learnings from this into the first iteration.

As per process, I analyzed the patterns and extracted commonalities to start working from.

We met over several working sessions to discuss the requirements mapped out in a very low fidelity to explore a wholistic approach.

By working closely with the CEO & CTO I drove the visual style and patterns of the various business requirements.

With this in place we were able to engage discussions with users with a Swedish household, and various industry leaders.

Dashboard/Home

The intent for the designs once accessing the App, was for the user to get a very high level view of the funds available and immediate access to the most recent transactions - seen as a common pattern across Bank apps.

The carousel was a proposed idea to offer flexibility on the visual overview. We agreed to maintain that the appropriate scope for view was one month, as often the measure for shared living situations (students sharing, partnerships, etc)  with monthly costs.

Being the hub for users to grasp an entirety of their history, the challenge to this design involved the analysis of what types of views are relvant (by time, by category, individual users, merchant) and how the filter should work.

North Star

Once we had the key screens in place, we decided to envision an interaction model that could elevate the app’s functionality.

I hence explored an inverted graph design, enabling users to quickly dive into a comparison of expenses and deposited funds at any chosen point on the chart.

Website

The initial designs were explorative in regard to branding and visual tone.

With the project being emphasized on the Application I was interested to explore how the visual communication could play to a photographic style that is dialled to black and white for allowing accent and classical typography to surface.

This was bound to be tested naturally, and was a means to think outside the norm when it comes to these types of websites.

Design Deliverable

To conclude the project, I delivered a fully functional Figma prototype to the CEO and CTO, showcasing all key user journeys.

Additionally, as I refined the app’s design language, I aligned it with a draft for a responsive website, a crucial tool for attracting new users and providing guidance for current customers.
